Household Balance Sheet Methodology
The page reads exactly S1M.b lines 1 to 40 and preserves their published hierarchy. It selects the latest quarter shared by all 40 required mnemonics. Lines 41 to 52 are memo items and are not rendered.
Hierarchy and exclusions
Total assets contains nonfinancial and financial assets. Debt securities and asset-side loans retain their published sub-breaks. Total liabilities contains four top-level components, with five loan sub-breaks beneath loans. Sub-breaks appear for context but are never added again when a parent total is reconciled.
The P-40 exclusion rule applies across all headline tables. Its clearest case is F4.5.s: Credit unions; total mortgages; asset (FL473065005.Q, line 26) is already inside private depository institutions. At 2026:Q1, adding that sub-line again would overstate mortgage holders by exactly 1,006,156 million dollars.
Life insurance companies, general accounts; deferred and unpaid life insurance premiums; asset (FL543077073.Q, S1M.b line 39) is nevertheless a published component of household total liabilities. Its 2026:Q1 value is 45,664 million dollars, and omitting it would leave the liability sum short by that amount.
