Z.1 Flow of Funds Matrix Methodology
The page reads 303 distinct quarterly mnemonics from the Federal Reserve's M3s_Q dictionary and places their 354 published occurrences into 33 rows and 17 columns. The remaining 207 row-column slots are left blank because the Fed publishes no series for them.
Structure and reconciliation
Row names are taken verbatim from the label of column 15 in each row, or column 16 when column 15 is absent. An unpublished matrix slot stays blank and is never converted to zero. Column 17 remains a separate instrument discrepancies column.
At 2026:Q1, the identity column 15 = column 9 + column 11 + column 13 can be evaluated for 9 complete asset rows. The maximum absolute residual measured during this build is 1 million dollars.
Series register
One row appears for each distinct mnemonic. Reused mnemonics occupy more than one published matrix cell but retain one Federal Reserve dictionary label and unit.
